In Memory of Ezra - 3 stories for you.

When your parents visited NY they often came for dinner and I would spend time during the day with them too.

1. One day I am in a cab in the back with Ruthie. Ezra sat in front next to the driver who had a last name about 10 letters long.  Driving up Madison Avenue Ezra asks him where he is from?  Brooklyn he says. No, before that ? I think it was Uganda.  Then, the driver asks Ezra where he is from ? Answer: Israel. No says the driver, before that ? The driver couldn’t believe a non-Arab was born in Israel (or Palestine) because that had been his education.  They “argue” about this and Ruthie says to me in French: “He is going to kill us!”.... not on Madison and 64th!

2. A Shabbat when George W. H. Bush had a 90% approval rating, it was close to election time and Ezra said that Bush would not be re-elected.  We laughed ! Ezra said no president who is anti-Israel would be re-elected.  The day after Bush lost, Ezra called from Belgium to say I told you so.

3. That same Shabbat dinner a friend was with us. She and I had started to take bridge lessons. Ezra suggested I play with Ruthie, he with my friend. Well, I hesitated in the first hand about which card to play and Ezra said, go ahead, play the jack. What? Was I using marked cards that he could see? Ezra knew what we each had…. a talent that I think many uncles had…. being good mathematicians.

Of course we had many visits to museums, restaurants but these were 3 instances that stood out.
